The detrital zircon record of Variscan to post-Variscan tectonosedimentary and magmatic processes in the Tauern Window (Eastern Alps)

Abstract Coupled U–Pb and Lu–Hf LA-ICP-MS detrital igneous zircon data were obtained from metasedimentary sequences (Kaserer Formation, Schmirntal Quartzite, Seidlwinkel Bündnerschiefer Basin, Riffler Basin) of the western Tauern Window (Eastern Alps). Results show maximum deposition ages between Late Permian Triassic, indicating protracted sedimentation magmatism Paleozoic Mesozoic. The fingerprint shows a change subchondritic to variable suprachondritic compositions at ca. 290 Ma, possibly documenting transition Variscan post-collisional processes intracontinental extension. Lithospheric thinning magmatic underplating may explain observed Hf isotopic evolution as result mixing crustal mantellic sources. From paleogeographical perspective, results confirm that was situated Alpine basement units (South Alpine, Austroalpine External Massifs) Bohemian Massif during Permian–Triassic.
